Frequently Asked Questions
Below you’ll find answers to questions we’re commonly asked by our customers. If you have a question and don’t see an answer, give us a call at 901 907- 0434 or email us at info@bluffcitystoneworks.com. We’d be happy to help!
Q: What is the thickness of the stone?
A: Our stone comes in 2cm = 3/4″ thickness and 3cm = 1 1/4″ thickness
Q: How much overhang can I have without adding support?
A: It depends on the stone being used.
- Granite & Marble = 12″
- Manufactured Quartz = 14″
*Note: Unsupported stone is susceptible to cracking or breaking with excessive amounts of weight or stress. We can provide counter balance supports or you can provide your own corbels.
Q: How do I clean my stone?
A: We recommend using a mild soap and water mixture or ammonia-free Windex. There are also cleaners made just for granite and marble. Never use harsh or abrasive chemicals on your stone tops! These products can strip the sealer off the stone or, worse, scratch and etch the tops.
Q: Can my stone stain?
A: Possibly. It depends on what type of stone you have.
- Granite: Not likely to stain, however, prolonged contact with any liquid may leave a spot. However, this spot will generally go away once the stone has a chance dry out. We recommend that you wipe away any spills or other liquids as soon as possible.
- Marble: Can stain. Marble is porus and soft, so it can easily absorb any liquid that is spilled on it. Spills or other liquids should be wiped from the surface immediately. When cleaning marble, avoid using products that are acidic or oil based. These can create stains, or even damage the stone.
- Quartz: Not likely to stain from contact with liquids. However, contact with extreme heat (hot cookware, appliances, etc.) could cause discoloration in the stone.
Q: How do I know when to seal my tops?
A: Sprinkle water on your countertops and see what it does. If the water beads up, then you do not have to re-seal. If the water soaks into the stone, then it it time to re-seal. For marble tops, we recommend re-sealing once a year.
Q: Will my countertops have a seam?
A: We try to avoid seams if possible, but it is possible your countertops will have a seam depending on your layout and the size of our stone slabs/remnants. Our staff will be happy to discuss placement options to avoid or minimize seams.
Q: How long do I need to wait before I get my countertops installed?
A: From the construction of the template to the installation, it usually takes 3 – 10 days, but wait times ultimately depend on our schedule and the job itself. If you would like an estimate on how long your job will take, please contact us. We’d be happy to give you a timeframe for when your job will be complete.
Q: What is etching?
A: Etching is a chemical process used to remove the polish from a piece of stone. An acid is used to remove a stone’s polish and roughen the stone’s surface.
Q: Is plumbing included with the installation?
A: No, we do not have a licensed plumber on staff. If you need a plumber, we’d be happy to recommend a plumber or schedule one for you.
If you still have questions, please contact our office or visit us in person. We’d be happy to help you with whatever it is you need from us.
